wow.īoot time on the original HD was about a minute and using the iMac was like wading through treacle USB 3 boot was much quicker, perhaps twenty seconds or so, and in use there was rarely any lag - but USB is not ideal as a boot device no matter how good the implementation. Ok, so what has this to do with the StarTech device here? Well, Thunderbolt is much, much faster than USB 3, so I bought it. I had a SSD (from another PC) and initially I cloned it and put it in an ordinary USB 3 enclosure and booted from that - with jaw-dropping effect on speed. I have a iMac that has no access to internal drives, and from day one I was very unhappy about the awful, slow internal hard disk it came with.
